devastation has struck our home in response to a bad haircut. it's one of the traits my boy is adamant about (hair). he loves it. it's important to him. but it was getting too long. and there was a little potential for the emo stage hiding behind those bangs in the things that hurt him. and i wanted to make sure he was facing life with both eyes...hiding from nothing, and taking it all on. i wanted to make sure he kept his look that makes him happy, too (i get that). & he was totally up for it, which was great. so we went. and as he sat in that chair, his long locks got shorter and shorter and shorter. and i was getting nervous. and he kept saying "that's good" (as in that's okay, I'm all done now, you can stop) but his curls kept falling to the floor. i am sad (although clearly encouraging and positive and upbeat). and my super sensitive empathetic self is even more sad that my cute boy is SO devastated. i'm also aware he might be feeling a little exposed, and so we'll work through it.
but it is hair. and it will grow. and he will be fine. i've had plenty a too-short-haircut in my day. particularly when the teased bangs had to be precisely the right length for the best nest-like poof above my forehead (i'm so glad those days are over). and my now ocd self is still quite sensitive to hair issues, and i understand more than ever. even still, i know he will be okay. he will face the oohs and ahhs at school tomorrow and build a little character. and perhaps i'll slip an extra vitamin in with his breakfast to get it growing back faster (does that really work?!).
and perhaps the breakdown that occurred tonight after a final glimpse at his shadow, was due to exhaustion. after all, we did spend the 2nd half of our day at the hospital anxiously awaiting the new Varela baby. congrats to my sweet friend for her determination for a natural birth and for her triumph to success!! it was beautiful to be there, to see her empowered, to see her helpful encouraging hubby, to see Cass who jetted in from Dallas for experienced support, to see her kiddos soaking in with pure excitement their new sibling, and to feel that sweet, soft, newborn skin. i'm so happy for her little growing family.
my boy is officially sound asleep possibly dreaming of longer hair. and now i'm off to bed myself...well, and to figure out how to make hair grow overnight.
