i peed at 11pm.
and when my 9 month pregnant peeing self never really quit peeing, i rolled my eyes at something else seeping from my body, put on a pad (TMI??) and went to bed.
and when my 9 month pregnant peeing self never really quit peeing, i rolled my eyes at something else seeping from my body, put on a pad (TMI??) and went to bed.
(isn't this a nice start to the story?) as it turns out, that was how my water broke.
about 3am i woke up to eat a blueberry muffin. (only pregnant people can get away with stuff like that). there was a little discomfort, but so was the last few weeks, and i was nauseous and extra uncomfortable the day before so it seemed it was how the pregnancy was going at that point. i visited with my mate a bit (sounds romantic, i know), and again went back to my sleeping state.
about 5am-ish i awoke again unable to get comfortable. i thought it might be good to practice writing down the times i felt discomfort, and practice timing contractions (i was a braxton hicks having crazy lady!) so i might have an actual idea of what they were talking about in those birthing classes. so i slipped a piece of paper and a pen under my pillow.
occasionally i would wake up to scribble a time, but for the most part i snoozed.
about 7am-ish, i was cramping. and i began to wonder. you know, if maybe i was in labor???
so a little before 8am i called my doctor, who advised me to get on my merry way to the hospital. which sent my mom into hysterics, which always makes me calmer, and put a pale nervous look on the face of my mate.
the hospital was 45 minutes away + it was 8am on a monday morning = a very interesting ride with a hysterical woman driving a laboring ME in morning rush hour traffic. my contractions were quite uncomfortable as i held on tight to the door handle. and my mom screamed each time that they were 1 minute apart (in truth we have no idea how to time contractions).
alas we arrived a little after 9am.
i walked through the hospital, and had a whopper of a contraction (the kind that makes you bend over immediately with a grimacing look on your face) in the elevator on the way up to labor and delivery.
the nurses saw me, slipped me into my room, my gown, with IV and all in about 4seconds (i swear). i was dilated to 6cm, and well on my way to my face to face meeting with this boy who'd been growing inside me at such a seemingly inappropriate and insane time of my life.
the doctor asked if i was ever going to call him, and later came in to instruct me to at least break a sweat to make it look like i'm working. i think these hips were made for baby-makin'.
before i could really process the moment, the epidural was being injected, my out of body experience went into full effect, and after about 45 minutes and a few pushes, i watched the doctors cleaning off this grand little life. and immediately after a little wipe down, the babe was plopped onto my belly. what a feeling! the first time our bodies met on the outside is a feeling i will never forget. it was the moment that jolted me back into myself and able to experience it for real. that moment seeped into the core of me. it changed me forever. it was my first feeling of mother.
11 years and about 1 hour have passed since that moment. the word mother makes me cry with a passionate connection to that core that i became aware of in an instant that monday morning. today i am celebrating the life of that sweet baby, who has grown into a preteen 11 year old. he stands just above my nose...he almost literally looks me eye to eye. our neighbor just told us (yesterday) we have the same haircut. he has a very sensitive, kind, empathetic heart, and he adores babies and toddlers. he can't wait for siblings. he loves me. he is making a significant transformation of knowing the love of a father (ironically, thank goodness for bipolar mondays). he loves him, too. he loves family. he is at the stage of confusion between electronics, sports and clothes, yet still toys. i love that those toys still get pulled out. daily. i'm grateful that he thrives academically. i love that he wants to rush home to watch arthur still after school. he has the funniest dr. phil impersonation, although he'll do it for no one else. he's my cute growing boy, and i love him.
today is his happy happy birthday.
